Reflections for day 3

  • Project Sharing Sessions
    • Note down at least three key learning points
  • 1st learning point:I learnt that teamwork is very important
  • 2nd learning point:I learnt that before doing a project work, I would have to learn more about that topic first rather than doing it straight away.
  • 3rd learning point:I learnt that organisation is very important.
  • How do you feel about the SST-NTU Flagship programme?
I learnt that the SST-NTU flagship programme is a very good opportunity for us to embark on and I had many wonderful and unforgettable experiences. I also deepened my knowledge about the distillation column and its usage.

Second day reflections

  • What did you do today?
    • Briefly describe your day’s activities
Today we did a slideshow presentation, and my group unfortunately lost. Although my group lost, I had a unforgettable experience and it was wonderful.
  • What did you learn today?
I learnt a lot more about the distillation column, more than yesterday, I learnt that in a distillation column, the denser impurities that has condensed, will then sink and it will be used for various purposes such as fuels for ships, factories and central heating while the less dense impurities will be used for liquified petroleum gas and fuel for cars.
  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
My group did not win the slideshow presentation competition but I learnt a lot and I would use this as a learning point to furthur help my studies and my non-academic portfolio

First day reflections

First day:
  • What did you do today?
    • Briefly describe your day’s activities
Today, We started off with knowing the parts of the distillation column and then we went on with the procedures and started the experiment. We then waited for the re-boiler to heat up, we waited for 30 minutes for the the re-boiler to reach the temperature of 80 degrees and waited for a while for the temperature to be stable(temperature does not fluctuate too much). After that, some of us took samples, while some of us took the temperatures of T1-T14 and the pressure gauge.
Next we did activity 5.2 , we changed the reflux to 5:1,  5 seconds worth of condensate goes back to column for every 1 second worth of condensate  to the product receiver, though reflux valve operations.

  • What did you learn today?
    • Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
I learnt how to calculate pressure from water(millimetres)
I learnt how to operate and understand the distillation column.
I learnt that the speed of the condensation, evaporation will change if the reflux mode is changed.
  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
    • Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
    • Share your insights for the day
This project has opened my mind, rather than the simple distillation set-up, the model refinery distillation column has been an eye-opener and it seemed a lot more confusing and complicated at first but the teaching staff have made it more simpler for us.

Pre-camp Questions( 25-5-15)

Pre-camp (25 May, Monday)
  • What sounds interesting about this project?

An operation of a model refinery distillation column seems quite interesting as it plays a vital part in energy. I am also interested in how the builders build the distillation column and how they incorporate several formulas and the usage of the sciences such as physics

  • What do you think you can learn from this project?
I think I can learn more about distillation and how it plays a vital part in our lives. I also can learn about the how many types of distillation columns and how they are different. I can also learn the basics of building a model refinery distillation column.

  • Any immediate questions regarding the project?

I do not have any immediate questions on this project, but I have questions once we start tomorrow.
